We have become so dependent on the church but not on Christ.
During this pandemic I witnessed many Christians freak out about church being closed, and that seemed odd to me. You see, these were believers that I knew were having a hard time accepting the closure of churches. I did sympathize with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ when they pointed out the hypocrisy of certain things being open but not church. What I did not sympathize with was their fear of not being able to attend church. I did not see the logic in that as I do not think church attendance should have an impact on our faith. And so I asked myself questions and spoke statements aloud to try and understand, and these were my thoughts.
The word of God was not being taken away. We were still able to pick up our Bible and read it. There was no law that was preventing us from doing so.
Worship? Well we can worship God with each action we take. We can worship God with the life we live. We can worship in our house by singing praises to the Lord, even if it was just us.
Our Faith is not based and should not be based on whether we attend church or not. Our salvation is not reliant on church attendance but on what Jesus did on the cross . So why were so many of my brothers and sisters having such a hard time accepting the church doors being closed?
Well, because we have become so dependent on the church when it comes to God’s word. We have become so accustomed to be told what to think and how to think from the pulpit that without it we don’t know what to do. We have become spiritually lazy. We have abdicated the responsibility of reading the Bible and receiving word from God himself. We have become illiterates , that would not know the difference from an actual verse in the Bible and just some proverb taken from a book.
We need to stop depending on the church and instead begin to truly and solely depend on God. I know this verse excerpt I am going to quote is from David writing about his troubles and his enemies, but it makes me think about how David solely trusted in the Lord, how he depended on God. I encourage you to begin to depend on Him who’s door cannot be closed because He is the door Himself.
” I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him. He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated. My salvation and honor depend on God; he is my strong protector; he is my shelter.” Psalm 62:5-7
And may I add that if community was what we felt was missing, we are also supposed to have it outside our church. Just saying friends….
